Why Yangshuo for Climbing

Yangshuo has over 1,000 bolted sport climbing routes spread across dozens of limestone karst crags, most within a 30-minute bike ride from town. The limestone is sharp, featured, and pocketed — similar to Thailand's Krabi but on a larger scale. The approaches are short (5-15 minutes), the scenery from the crags is world-class, and the climbing community is international and welcoming. It's been a climbing destination since the 1990s and has only gotten better as more routes have been developed.

Key Crags

  • White Mountain: The iconic Yangshuo crag. Steep, technical limestone with classic routes from 5.10 to 5.14. Gets afternoon sun — best in the morning or on cooler days. The view from the wall looks straight at a wall of karst peaks.
  • Swiss Cheese: Beginner and intermediate friendly wall with easier routes (5.7-5.11). Great holds, short approach, and a shady aspect. The go-to crag for your first day.
  • Lei Pi Shan (Thunder Cliff): Large south-facing crag with a good mix of grades. Best in winter when you want sun. Routes from 5.9 to 5.13. About 15 minutes from town.
  • Wine Bottle: A massive limestone pillar with multi-pitch potential. Classic adventure climbing with a summit view that justifies every pitch. Routes up to 5.12. About 20 minutes from town.
  • The Egg: A distinctive egg-shaped crag with technical face climbing. Steep, sustained, and shady. Routes from 5.11 up.

Practical Info

  • Best season: October-December (cool, dry, best friction on the limestone). March-May is also good but can be humid. June-September is hot and humid — climb early mornings or at shaded crags.
  • Guidebook: The "Yangshuo Climbing" guidebook is available at climbing shops on Guihua Road and at the Black Rock climbing shop near West Street. Digital topos are also available online.
  • Gear rental: Shops on Guihua Road rent harnesses (30 RMB/day), shoes (30 RMB/day), and ropes (50 RMB/day). If you're a serious climber, bring your own shoes — rental shoes see heavy use.
  • Guides: English-speaking climbing guides are available from ~400 RMB per half-day. Recommended for first-timers to the area who want to maximize their climbing time on the right routes. Black Rock Climbing and Yangshuo Climbing School are the established operators.
  • Safety: Bolts are generally well-maintained on popular routes. On less-traveled routes, inspect bolts before committing. Helmets are recommended — loose rock is possible on less-climbed routes.
