Guilin Yangshuo 5-Day Deep Dive
The relaxed plan: Li River, Yangshuo countryside, Longji Rice Terraces, Xingping, and hidden corners.
Day 1: Arrive Guilin
Fly or train into Guilin. Afternoon: visit Elephant Trunk Hill (the city icon, 55 RMB). Walk the lakeside path around Shanhu and Ronghu Lakes. See the Sun and Moon Pagodas — they're beautiful when lit up after dark. Dinner: Guilin rice noodles at a local shop. Chongshan Rice Noodles near the city center is the classic choice. Stay near the lakes in the city center.
Day 2: Li River to Yangshuo
Take the full 4-hour Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo. Board at Mopanshan Pier around 9 AM, arrive at Yangshuo around 1 PM. The cruise includes a basic lunch. Check into your Yangshuo hotel. Afternoon: settle in and explore West Street and the riverside paths. Early evening: walk or bike a short loop west of town to catch the last light on the peaks. Dinner: beer fish at a local restaurant.
Day 3: Yangshuo Countryside (Full Day)
The best day of the trip. Rent a bike or e-bike and ride the Ten Mile Gallery road heading south. Stop at Gongnong Bridge for photos of bamboo rafts on the Yulong River. Continue to the Yulong Bridge area and take a bamboo raft (1.5 hours, 150-200 RMB per raft). After the raft, bike back north and hike Moon Hill (30-40 min up) for the panoramic view. Lunch at a farmhouse restaurant along the road. Late afternoon: if you still have energy, explore the small dirt paths branching off the main road — they lead to tiny villages and some of the best views. Evening: Yangshuo cooking class (book ahead, ~150 RMB for a half-day class — learn beer fish and rice noodles).
Day 4: Longji Rice Terraces (Day Trip)
Full-day excursion to the Longji Rice Terraces (2 hours each way from Guilin/Yangshuo). Leave early — 7 AM departure to maximize time there. Visit Ping'an village (the more accessible area). Hike between viewpoints: Seven Stars with Moon and Nine Dragons and Five Tigers. The terraces change dramatically with the seasons: flooded and mirror-like in May-June, lush green in July-August, golden in September. Lunch at a village restaurant with a view over the terraces. Return to Guilin or Yangshuo by evening. This is a long day — the driving alone is 4 hours round trip. But the terraces are unlike anything else in the region.
Day 5: Xingping & Depart
Morning visit to Xingping Ancient Town if you haven't fully explored it already. Walk the old street, visit the 20 RMB viewpoint. If you're up for it, climb Laozhai Mountain (1,159 steps, 40-50 min) for the most spectacular view in the region — the Li River horseshoe bend with peaks fading into layers. Start the climb by 7 AM. Afternoon: head to Guilin for departure, or catch a high-speed train to your next destination. Guangzhou is 2.5 hours away by train — a natural next stop if you're continuing your China trip.
Pacing Note
Five days gives you breathing room. Don't try to fill every minute. The best moments in Yangshuo happen when you stop, sit by the river with a beer, and watch the light change on the peaks. Build in downtime.
