How to Fit Guilin Into Your China Trip
Multi-city routes with flight times, train connections, and where Guilin fits in the classic China circuit.
The Classic China Circuit
Most first-time visitors follow a route like: Beijing (Great Wall, Forbidden City) -> Xi'an (Terracotta Warriors) -> Guilin/Yangshuo (karst scenery) -> Shanghai (modern China). Guilin fits perfectly as the nature-and-recovery segment between the intensity of Beijing/Xi'an and the urban energy of Shanghai.
Connection Times
| From | To Guilin by Air | To Guilin by Train |
|---|---|---|
| Beijing | 3 hours | ~10 hours (high-speed) |
| Xi'an | 2 hours | ~8 hours |
| Shanghai | 2.5 hours | ~9 hours |
| Guangzhou | 1 hour | 2.5 hours (high-speed) |
| Hong Kong | 1.5 hours | 3.5 hours (via Shenzhen) |
| Chengdu | 1.5 hours | ~7 hours |

Beijing (3 days) -> Xi'an (2 days) -> Guilin/Yangshuo (3 days) -> Shanghai (2 days). Fly between cities; the Beijing-Xi'an leg is also a nice high-speed train ride (4.5h).
Route B: The Southern Loop (7 Days)
Hong Kong (2 days) -> High-speed train to Guilin (3.5h) -> Guilin/Yangshuo (3 days) -> Fly to Chengdu (2 days, pandas + Sichuan food). Great if you're flying into Hong Kong.

Shanghai (2 days) -> Fly to Guilin -> Guilin/Yangshuo (3 days) -> Fly to Lijiang -> Yunnan (4 days: Lijiang, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Shangri-La). Best for nature lovers who want China's two most scenic regions in one trip.
Booking Strategy
Book domestic flights 2-4 weeks ahead for the best prices (typically $80-150 per leg). High-speed train tickets open 15 days before departure — set a reminder. For the Guangzhou-Guilin train (2.5h, the most convenient), book as soon as tickets open during peak seasons.
